Joseph DuLaney provides a walking tour of life in Nashville’s historic Germantown.

A stroll through the historic neighborhood of Germantown provides one with a vast opportunity to explore some of Nashville’s best architecture, restaurants, retail, and sporting events. Founded in the 1850’s, Germantown is considered Nashville’s first suburb and boasts stunning Victorian architecture and historic cottages along its tree lined streets.  The area is listed as an arboretum and contains over 100 species of trees, creating a warm and inviting neighborhood to take a walk or ride a bike.

Find a local and they will bring you up to speed on what to do in Germantown, but here is what you can try if you have some time to spend in the area.

First stop, coffee.  The usual stop for locals is either Red Bicycle or Barista Parlor.  Both serve up an amazing cup of coffee and have an environment that will have you wanting to sit for a few and chat with the locals.  Some other great locations to enjoy a nice cup are Steadfast and Tempered.

Next stop, Bicentennial Park and The Farmers Market.  Just a few minutes walk takes you into the 19 acre park where you can take in a view of the State Capital, visit the 95 Bell Carillon, walk the Pathway of History and Rivers of Tennessee Fountains, or my personal favorite, the granite globe.  Walk up to it and give it a spin.

Walk out of the park and into the Farmers Market and you will be greeted with local produce, meats, and baked goods from around the area as well as some local artisans.  Inside the market there is a collection of food and retail to explore as well. Need some breakfast? Check out Music City Crepes in the market.

As the day continues, take your time and explore the streets of Germantown.

As you walk, you see an amazing mix of history and modern buildings within the backdrop of the skyline of Nashville.  As you come across 3rd Ave, stop into Christie Cookies. Known to locals, this cookie factory has been a mainstay in the city for years and has a great little shop to pick up a cookie or two.  A little secret. If you buy one, they will always give you an extra one for the road!

Cupcakes more your style?   Check out Cupcake Collection on 6th.  This local specialty shop serves up some delicious cupcakes.  Grab a cupcake, sit on the front porch of the shop and enjoy a break from walking. After a stop for cookies or a cupcake, check out some of the local retail.

Bits and Pieces is a super cool stop with piles of antiques, clothing, and artisan pieces.  Alexis + Bolt is a great retail experience featuring a solid mix of curating goods for men and women.  Lastly, have kids or need that unique gift for a baby shower? Swing by Rich Hippies, you won’t be disappointed.

Germantown, with its historic past and openness to new shops is one of Nashville’s best neighborhoods, and a great place to live! Joseph DuLaney is an affiliate broker at Poplar Hill Realty, and can be reached via (615) 673-9205
